Q Extra Credit Assignment and Guidelines As noted at the beginning of the course and in your syllabus, there are opportunities to do work for extra credit. You will be able to watch documentaries at home and critically access them. All the documentaries and events deal with contemporary social problems: media ownership and reporting, healthcare crisis, environmental degradation, drug addiction, war, economic difficulties, etc. The main objectives of watching the documentaries: to sharpen your critical thinking skills. After attending an event or watching a documentary, follow the below guidelines. Each documentary watched (with response) is worth 1% added to your final grade and you are able to attain up to 3%. I will not grade your critiques (both positive and negative) based on whether I agree with you but rather based on how you support you critiques. For example, simply stating you liked all the points made in the film is not enough. I would like a detailed analysis of what particular points you agreed with and why. The paper calls for three main parts: 1) A Brief (3-5 sentences) introduction and summary of the film. 2) Discuss the parts of the film you agreed with and why. Just stating your approval of those parts is not enough. Explain exactly why you concurred with the speakers/director’s viewpoint(s). 3) Discuss the parts of the film you felt would have benefited from further investigation and alternative viewpoints or perspectives. Did the speaker/director miss an important point in relation to a specific topic within the event? What if anything parts did you disagree with and why? Please avoid documentaries you have already seen. The assignment requires that you rent the film from a video store or watch them through other sources (online, etc) and attach the proof of rental (receipt or URL where film was watched) to your paper. Make sure I get your extra credit work by 11:59pm on the deadline/date noted in the module section. You can upload your work to the assignments section of Canvas or hand in your work on the day of your final exam. Paper Format: 1 Page single-spaced. 1” margins. 12 font.
